Piriformus syndrome is a condition that causes the sciatic nerve to be irritated or compressed by the piriformis muscle. It is a deep muscle in the buttocks that is primarily responsible for rotating the leg outwards. It can irritate the sciatic nerve because of stiffness, tightness, overuse or strain of the piriformis muscle, or as a result of the mechanics or structure of the piriformis area.

What to do about it?  A simple myofascial release technique is all you need to relieve the symptoms of sciatic pain.  Place a tennis ball on the floor and sit on it with one butt cheek.  Take the ankle of the same leg and cross it on the other knee.  Find painful points and roll over them while on the tennis ball.  Do this 30 – 60 seconds a day and the pain will go away.
